Originally created in 2007 as an internal tool called Hoptoad by Rails consultancy Thoughtbot, it was launched publicly in 2008. It was acquired and spun out into a dedicated business in 2010, renamed Airbrake in 2011, and later acquired by LogicMonitor in 2021.
