Capgo

Overview

Capgo is an open-source over-the-air (OTA) deployment and live update platform purpose-built for Capacitor and Ionic mobile applications. The tool allows software developers to push bug fixes, layout enhancements, and web bundle modifications instantly to users' devices without waiting days for App Store or Google Play reviews. Featuring end-to-end encryption, multi-channel deployment streams, and targeted rollouts, it offers detailed device logs and system diagnostics. It replaces high-cost alternative suites with a fully bootstrapped developer workflow framework.

What it does

• Delivers over-the-air updates for Capacitor mobile applications.
• Pushes bug fixes and new features without App Store reviews.
• Manages multiple app versions and allows instant rollbacks.
• Improves developer agility and end-user app stability.

Who it's for

• Capacitor App Developers
• Ionic Mobile Engineers
• Independent SaaS Makers
• Mobile Product Teams

Why it works

• Deploys code patches globally within minutes using serverless edge computing
• Uses partial differential bundle delivery reducing client update bandwidth sizes
• Secures app distributions using robust end-to-end encryption frameworks
• Provides integrated terminal CLI diagnostics verifying package safety before uploads
• Enables controlled step-by-step rolling channel updates ensuring device health

Founder story

Capgo was built by independent remote developer Martin Donadieu in late 2021. While refactoring his own multi-platform mobile apps, Martin ran into severe delays with native App Store validation queues. Priced out of legacy enterprise solutions like Ionic Appflow, he engineered a native open-source plugin loop to pull compressed zips from secure cloud buckets. Operating as a fully bootstrapped entity out of Estonia via Digital Shift OU, Capgo evolved into a production-tested platform serving over 3,500 companies.

Alternatives

• Ionic Appflow
• Microsoft Visual Studio App Center
• Expo Application Services
• CodePush

Comparison overview

• Unlike enterprise-focused options like Ionic Appflow that lock developers behind heavy contract tiers, Capgo functions with an open-source framework.
• It sets itself apart from traditional systems by including self-hosting capabilities alongside a globally accelerated serverless edge CDN layout.
• Furthermore, the system minimizes network overhead by computing differential package changes dynamically, pushing only modified components instead of re-downloading entire base web views.
