Finch

Overview

Finch is a unified employment API that allows developers to securely access organizational, payroll, and benefits data across hundreds of different HR systems. It standardizes fragmented data models, meaning B2B platforms only have to integrate once to read and write employment data instantly.

What it does

• Connects B2B apps securely to HR and payroll systems.
• Standardizes messy employment data into a single format.
• Pulls live headcount, salary, and company directory info.
• Writes payroll deductions back to the underlying provider.
• Updates records automatically every 24 hours.

Who it's for

• Software engineers
• B2B founders
• Product managers
• Fintech operators.

Why it works

• Unified Data Model: It standardizes inconsistent API structures from hundreds of payroll providers so developers only have to build one integration.
• Bidirectional Sync: Not only reads data but allows apps to write payroll deductions back directly to the provider.
• Massive Coverage: Integrates with over 200 HRIS and payroll systems out of the box, covering 88% of US employers.
• Instant Compliance: Acts as a secure, SOC2-compliant layer so developers don't have to handle raw, sensitive PII data manually.
• Developer First: Features robust documentation and highly predictable endpoints that drastically reduce go-to-market times.

Founder story

While building a previous lending startup, Jeremy Zhang and Ansel Parikh realized that verifying employment data was a massive bottleneck. They had to manually download CSV files from different HR systems just to underwrite a simple loan. Realizing the entire employment ecosystem was fragmented and disconnected, they pivoted to build Finch, acting as the 'Plaid for Payroll' to connect the entire industry.

Alternatives

• Merge
• Nylas
• Apideck
• Kompra

Comparison overview

• Merge: A broader unified API platform that covers CRM, ticketing, and accounting alongside HRIS.
• Nylas: A unified API mostly known for email, calendar, and contacts integration rather than deep payroll data.
• Apideck: A massive ecosystem API hub focusing on offering an integrated marketplace for SaaS.
• Kompra: A niche integration tool largely focused on identity verification.
• Unlike Merge or Apideck which try to unify every category of SaaS, Finch is hyper-focused solely on the employment ecosystem. It offers incredibly deep, read-write capabilities (like writing deductions directly into a payroll ledger) that broader unified APIs simply cannot match.
