Learning Machine Technologies

Overview

Learning Machine Technologies (now part of Hyland) is a pioneering cryptographic issuance platform engineered specifically for educational institutions, governments, and corporate entities. The software co-developed the open-source Blockcerts standard to replace slow, easily forged paper-based transcript workflows with decentralized verification mechanisms. By anchoring digital records directly into public ledger nodes, the system creates permanent, portable credentials that users own for life. The architecture transforms how human capital verification occurs globally, cutting out administrative document validation backlogs for university registrars.

What it does

• Issues tamper-proof digital diplomas, academic transcripts, and professional certifications at scale utilizing blockchain anchors.
• Deploys the open-source Blockcerts protocol framework to generate cryptographic proof files independent of vendor stack architectures.
• Provides automated multi-recipient batch mailing systems paired with custom branded HTML certificate templates.
• Powers mobile-responsive digital wallets enabling individuals to securely store, manage, and instantly share verified records.
• Validates incoming structural credentials dynamically through decentralized public keys matching public ledger timestamps.
• Generates continuous administrative compliance logs mapping full institutional credential revision cycles sequentially.

Who it's for

• University Registrars and Higher Education Institutions automating diploma verification workflows
• Government Ministries and Civil Service Bureaus launching universal portable identity frameworks
• Professional Certification Bodies and Training Guilds issuing secure continuing education badges
• Global Enterprise Recruiting Teams vetting incoming applicant compliance records instantly

Why it works

• Prevents educational document forgery by securing academic records behind cryptographic hash footprints on decentralized networks.
• Eliminates lifetime transactional validation fees for graduates by allowing employers to verify certificates entirely for free.
• Reduces administrative overhead for student affairs staff by shifting record requests to self-service digital platforms.
• Ensures long-term proof of validity even if the issuing institution closes down or changes its software setup.
• Meets strict data sovereignty laws by allowing individuals to control who views their records.

Founder story

Learning Machine Technologies was founded in 2011 by Chris Jagers, Dan Hughes, and a team of software innovators in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Initially operating as an agile web-based learning content workspace, the founders recognized a critical operational bottleneck in modern workforce migration: verifying academic records was a slow, paper-reliant process vulnerable to forgery. In 2016, they collaborated with the MIT Media Lab to design and release Blockcerts, an open-source standard for securing digital credentials on the blockchain. This innovation evolved the business into an international provider of decentralized credential infrastructure, leading to its acquisition by Hyland in February 2020.

Comparison overview

• Learning Machine Technologies sets itself apart from standard badge platforms like Credly by building its core architecture around the decentralized open-source Blockcerts standard rather than proprietary database files.
• Unlike basic transcript brokers like Parchment that function as centralized clearinghouses, Learning Machine shifts record ownership straight to individual user wallets.
• While tools like Accredible specialize in social media badge configurations, Learning Machine prioritizes tamper-proof, high-security academic and government verification pipelines.
• Following its 2020 merger with Hyland, the platform sits integrated with robust enterprise content services (ECM), whereas standalone alternative scripts struggle to plug into legacy institutional core registers directly.
