Perplexity

Overview

Perplexity is an AI-powered answer engine that delivers instant, accurate, and cited responses to complex queries. By leveraging its own search infrastructure, Sonar, alongside leading frontier models, it offers a research-first experience that bypasses traditional link-based search results. Recently evolved into Perplexity Computer, the platform now orchestrates multiple specialized AI models to autonomously complete complex, multi-step tasks and deep investigations.

What it does

• Provides real-time, cited answers to user queries by searching the web and synthesizing information from authoritative sources.
• Orchestrates 19+ specialized AI models in parallel via the Perplexity Computer platform to autonomously execute multi-step research tasks.
• Enables deep investigations into massive datasets and files, allowing users to analyze, summarize, and extract insights from documents.
• Facilitates model comparison via the Model Council, allowing simultaneous output evaluation from top-tier models like GPT-5.6 and Claude Sonnet 5.
• Offers a browser-based agent, Comet, to handle tasks like price comparisons, email drafting, and web navigation automatically.

Who it's for

• Researchers
• Knowledge Workers

Why it works

• Subscription-first model prioritizes user trust and objective results by removing advertising, creating a clean and distraction-free information experience.
• Agentic platform (Perplexity Computer) expands the value proposition from simple question-answering to autonomous completion of complex, multi-step work processes.
• Multi-model flexibility allows users to compare and choose the best AI reasoning engine for specific research or productivity tasks.
• High-performance search infrastructure (Sonar) ensures responses are grounded in real-time, verifiable sources rather than just probabilistic training data.
• Rapid, high-retention product development cycle keeps the platform at the cutting edge of AI-driven research and automation workflows.

Founder story

Perplexity was founded in 2022 by Aravind Srinivas, Andy Konwinski, Denis Yarats, and Johnny Ho. Headquartered in San Francisco, the founders combined expertise from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and the creators of the Transformer architecture to build a more direct, accurate way to access information than traditional search engines.
