Founder story

Setapp was created in 2017 by tech entrepreneur Oleksandr Kosovan, the founder and CEO of veteran Ukrainian software house MacPaw. Headquartered in Kyiv, Ukraine, MacPaw had achieved massive global success since 2008 with its flagship utility CleanMyMac. Recognizing that users were growing fatigued by managing dozens of fragmented SaaS subscriptions and complex license codes, Oleksandr designed a unified marketplace. The ecosystem delivers curation for buyers while giving independent software developers steady, recurring royalty income blocks.

Comparison overview

• Unlike the native Apple App Store which demands individual paywalls or separate in-app purchase tiers for every asset, Setapp unlocks its full fleet for one flat fee.
• It positions itself apart from ad-driven deal directories like MacUpdate by eliminating malware scripts and low-quality software bloat entirely via strict editorial moderation.
• Furthermore, its automated cross-device sync layer handles background updates and license tracking seamlessly, providing an integrated desktop experience.
