Smartlook

Overview

Smartlook is a qualitative analytics platform that helps businesses understand user behavior across websites and mobile apps. It combines session recordings, heatmaps, and event tracking to show exactly why users drop off. This gives founders the visual context needed to fix friction points and increase conversions.

What it does

• Records user sessions to show exact mouse movements.
• Generates heatmaps to visualize where people click most.
• Tracks custom events and button clicks automatically.
• Builds conversion funnels to spot user drop-offs.
• Captures mobile app crash logs tied to video replays.

Who it's for

• Product managers
• UX/UI designers
• Marketers
• Data analysts
• Developers.

Why it works

• Visual Context: It shows you the "why" behind the data by letting you watch actual user sessions.
• Cross-Platform Tracking: Works seamlessly across web, iOS, Android, and even Unity games.
• Always-On Recording: Captures data automatically so you don't have to manually configure every tracking event upfront.
• Crash Insights: Links technical mobile crashes directly to video replays so developers can debug faster.
• Funnel Analysis: Highlights the exact step in a checkout or signup process where users get confused and leave.

Founder story

While building their previous customer support startup, Petr Janošík and Ondřej Machek realized they couldn't see exactly what users were doing when they encountered bugs. Frustrated by blind analytics, they built an internal session recording tool. It became so popular with their existing users that they spun it off entirely, launching Smartlook to give founders pure visual context.

Alternatives

• Hotjar
• FullStory
• Contentsquare
• Crazy Egg

Comparison overview

• Hotjar: Dominates basic web heatmaps and surveys but lacks native mobile and gaming support.
• FullStory: A heavy, premium enterprise platform for deep quantitative and qualitative analysis.
• Contentsquare: Focuses largely on digital experience analytics for massive enterprise brands.
• Crazy Egg: A simpler, legacy tool primarily known for snapshot heatmaps and A/B testing.
• Unlike Google Analytics which only shows quantitative drop-offs or Hotjar which focuses mostly on websites, Smartlook stands out by offering robust native mobile app and Unity game session recordings. It provides actual video replays of why users abandoned funnels across every platform.
