Founder story
Workday was founded in March 2005 in Pleasanton, California, by Dave Duffield and Aneel Bhusri following Oracle's hostile takeover of PeopleSoft. Drawing on their deep enterprise software backgrounds, the founders set out to build a pure cloud SaaS alternative to legacy on-premise ERP platforms. The company went public in 2012 and grew into a global market leader.

Comparison overview
Workday was built natively as a single-codebase cloud application combining HR and Finance in one database architecture.
Unlike legacy competitors like SAP or Oracle, which assembled their cloud suites through disparate legacy software acquisitions, Workday avoids complex multi-system sync layers.
